Today’s Scripture
Mark 16: 15-20 ESV
At that time: Jesus appeared to the Eleven and he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.’
So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.
Reflection
This passage, somewhat in dispute as to whether it should form part of Mark’s Gospel, may raise questions for us. If so, the invitation would be to take those questions and wonderings into conversation with God. One thing it does make clear, something which it may often be easy for us not to see, or be aware of, is that being called to share in God’s kingdom work – here the call to the eleven was to ‘proclaim the good news to the whole creation’ – is not about working for God, or working alone, but about working with God. ‘The Lord worked with them’ (v 20).
How does the reality that God works with you impact you?
Where are you seeing signs that the Lord is working with you?
What conversation are you drawn to have with God about this?
