Day 44

Hope

During the Last Supper in Jerusalem, Jesus clearly predicts to his disciples his forthcoming suffering and death. Yet he leaves them with cause for hope in this new covenant, the taking of his body and blood in memory of him. Although he might be leaving this world in a straightforward bodily sense, he leaves his spirit and body for us all to take up his mission.

Today’s Prayer

Preparation: Begin by stilling; then dedicating the time of prayer to God and asking God that all you think, feel and imagine are for the glory of God.

Gift:  Ask for what you desire.  Suggestion: To appreciate more deeply the Eucharist which Christ left for us.

Setting: A Scripture reading to imagine that you are in that upper room with the disciples.
Imaginative Contemplation

When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table.
And he said to them, ‘I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfilment in the kingdom of God.’

After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, ‘Take this and divide it among you.
For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’

And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying,
‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’

In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying,
‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

Conversation: Talk to Jesus in your own words as a friend

Final Prayer: End with a formal prayer such as the Lord’s Prayer/Our Father.
